Again when put in that context it seems to fit. But like a lot of his lyrics, we don't have many explanations from the man himself. It's another in a very long line of Taupin lyrics about "falling out of love" or having problems in a relationship. He does it well, no doubt. I could see how if you really looked hard you interpret this song the way you did. That's the beauty of Taupin, ya don't always know for sure, which is a very good thing.
