First time I've ev...Nice to hear from you Paul. First time I've ever disagreed with you. I haven't seen the movie nor do I intend to. I probably will at some point... perhaps in passing through a friends house on Netflix someday. I've seen various clips and read some comments from some of the real characters that were there. And that's good enough for me to stray away from it. Like the 12 concerts I've gone to since 2008, with virtually the same set list, I feel I would leave the movie theater disappointed. I went to one concert last September. I simply had to as a hardcore fan. I had high expectations for a fresh and unique set list for the Farewell Tour. But, disappointment was all I got. That disappointed feeling has become a trend for me with Elton John over the last quite a few years.

The set list which I compare to stale potato chips. The last three albums; each one being worst than the one before. The seemingly endless repackaging of the Greatest Hits CD's. The total disregard of the 50th anniversary of EJ & BT - which would have been the perfect timing of a great release... perhaps a Dream Ticket 2 say. Then, when EJ FINALLY does release something cool [ 11/17/70 and Live In Russia 1979 ] it just becomes a debacle. Due to the extreme limited release and only in the form of vinyl. I get the Record Store Day event. Sort of. But, why not just release those key concert dates in CD too??!! This way the other 96% of music fans without turn tables can enjoy it. Indeed, even if I wanted those releases in vinyl, good luck finding a record store which had more than 5 copies!!!!

No, I'll just forgo this movie. I'm a hardcore EJ music fan. The movie for me would be like going to an EJ tribute band. Which I'd rather go to the dentist than do that. On second thought, at least a EJ tribute band would make a honest effort. Unlike the movie, which lacks all honesty from what I gathered. For now, I'll just wait patiently for Davey Johnstone's documentary. Hopefully that will be done soon after this tour is over. I also have high hopes for a series of "Deep Cuts" concerts once the smoke clears from this tour. When those two things happen, I'll be a excited Elton John fan again. Until then, I'll just enjoy my vast sound board collection.

Great hearing from you Paul. Just wish it were under different circumstances. Take care.

David LewisAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08766715452426093750noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17780980198120607.post-13784436669555471862018-07-24T03:15:28.597-07:002018-07-24T03:15:28.597-07:00Good to have you back Paul. Blue Wonderful is quickly becoming my least favorite even amoung bonus tracks. Of course what you are charting is the transformation of disco from being played by musicians to being created electronically by drum machines and the like. The latter not being a happy bedfellow with Elton's music but has of course become the foundation of all current pop music. Makes it all the more impressive fir him to stay reasonably relevant by eschewing the technology for the mostpart. Strength in the songs as ever; not reliant on electronic beats or bass (let's leave Leather Jackets out of this...!)Ednoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17780980198120607.post-17586285628471674032015-11-01T23:05:50.573-08:002015-11-01T23:05:50.573-08:00I’ve been a huge Elton John fan all the way back t...I’ve been a huge Elton John fan all the way back to Madman Across the Water, and saw him in concert in 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1976. However, for all the publicity and hype, for me The Diving Board was a huge disappointment. T-Bone Burnett may be a fine producer, but I don't believe he knows how to produce Elton John. His style and production values are far too stark and sterile. 2001’s Songs from the West Coast saw Elton once again approach his potential. Why? Awesome production by Patrick Leonard, the only producer since the late Gus Dudgeon who knew how to produce Elton John in the studio. It’s not about trying to recapture the magic of 1970s, it’s about understanding a sound, a sound that is the essence of an Elton John record.

Elton has said that he’s not the type of artist that will ever again be played on the radio and, compared to his popularity in the 1970s, he’s correct; that will never happen again. But the potential for a hit album and single is still there. Bernie Taupin’s lyrics are as good as ever. Elton’s voice, while lowered by age and altered as a result of surgery to remove polyps on his vocal cords in the late 1980s, is still recognizable and a force to be reckoned with. If you listen to some of the his early (pre-Honky Chateau) albums, his voice is actually very similar to today; deeper and warmer. Whether that was the result of acoustics in the old Trident Studios or a conscious effort on his part, it’s comparable. And I think it is his natural voice; throughout his career he’s ‘reverted’ back to it. Think songs as chronologically diverse as Your Song, Candle in the Wind, Blue Eyes, Cold as Christmas (in the middle of the year) and Home Again. Yet, for some reason, and often on the same album, he has recorded songs in a much higher pitch, such as Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and The Bitch is Back.

The ’70s are history but, as Songs from the West Coast showed, the sound and magic doesn’t have to be. The key is in the production. It seems as though Mr. Burnett may have taken more of a back seat on Wonderful Crazy Night, and let old friends reconnect in the studio and do what they do best. I hope so.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16550377241151867275noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17780980198120607.post-85089969018166751462015-10-28T07:29:25.219-07:002015-10-28T07:29:25.219-07:00Hi Carlos, thanks so much for the kind words. It's a masterful album that simply outshines everything Elton and Bernie have done in 40 years. With all due respect to the band whom I love so much and Dee is so missed, Elton is more than the band. T Bone has brought out the best of EJ not since The late great Gus D. The piano riffs on TDB are amazing. The lyrics and music are so emotional and intense original sounding.
